Florence Foster Jenkins

Stephen Pile, in his book The Book of Heroic Failures, famously ranked her as the world's worst opera singer, noting that no one had ever liberated themselves so completely from the constraints of musical notation.

Despite her technical incompetence, Jenkins emerged as a prominent musical camp cult figure in New York City throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Her performances attracted a diverse audience, including notable celebrities such as Cole Porter, Gian Carlo Menotti, and Sir Thomas Beecham, all of whom were among her fans. Even the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso reportedly held her in affection and respect, a testament to her unique place in the musical landscape.

The poet William Meredith offered a vivid description of a Jenkins recital, likening it to an early Christian's experience among lions. He suggested that her performances were not merely aesthetic experiences but rather a form of immolation, where Madame Jenkins was ultimately consumed by the spectacle she created. This paradox of failure and charm solidified her legacy as a beloved, if unconventional, figure in the world of music.
