Florin Cîțu, born on April first, nineteen seventy-two, is a prominent Romanian economist and politician, recognized for his significant contributions to the country's political landscape. He served as the Prime Minister of Romania from December twenty twenty to November twenty twenty-one, with a brief period of acting leadership in October and November twenty twenty-one. Often referred to as Romania's first libertarian Prime Minister, Cîțu's tenure was marked by his commitment to liberal economic policies.
In addition to his role as Prime Minister, Cîțu was the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) from September twenty twenty-one until April twenty twenty-two. His leadership came to an end following a motion of no-confidence that resulted in the fall of his government. Subsequently, he was elected President of the Senate of Romania by a coalition formed by the PSD-PNL-UDMR/RMDSZ after his premiership concluded.
Despite his initial success, Cîțu's presidency in the Senate was short-lived, as he resigned in June twenty twenty-two when the coalition withdrew its support. Prior to his time as Prime Minister, he held the position of Minister of Public Finance in both the first and second cabinets under former PNL Prime Minister Ludovic Orban from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty, where he played a crucial role in shaping Romania's fiscal policies.
