Fox

Foxes are fascinating small-to-medium-sized mammals that belong to the family Canidae, showcasing a remarkable adaptability as omnivores. Characterized by their flattened skulls, upright triangular ears, pointed snouts, and long bushy tails, these creatures are a sight to behold in various habitats across the globe.

Within the monophyletic group of true foxes, twelve species are classified under the genus Vulpes. Additionally, there are around twenty-five other species, both current and extinct, that are colloquially referred to as foxes. This includes the South American foxes and unique species such as the bat-eared fox, gray fox, and island fox.

Foxes have established their presence on every continent except Antarctica, with the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) being the most common and widespread species, boasting approximately forty-seven recognized subspecies. Their global distribution, coupled with a reputation for cunning, has made them prominent figures in popular culture and folklore across various societies.

The tradition of hunting foxes with packs of hounds has deep roots in Europe, particularly in the British Isles, and this practice was carried over by European settlers to different regions of the New World, further embedding the fox in cultural narratives.
