Fra Mauro

Fra Mauro, born in the year one thousand three hundred eighty-five, was a distinguished Italian cartographer renowned for his exceptional contributions to the field of map-making during the Renaissance period. Residing in the Republic of Venice, he dedicated his life to the art of cartography, ultimately creating the Fra Mauro map, which stood as the most detailed and accurate representation of the world known at that time.

As a monk of the Camaldolese Monastery of St. Michael, situated on the picturesque island of Murano in the Venetian Lagoon, Fra Mauro established a thriving cartography workshop. This serene environment allowed him to focus on his craft, blending his spiritual life with his passion for exploration and geography.
