Francesca Albanese

Francesca Albanese, born on March thirtieth, nineteen seventy-seven, is a distinguished Italian legal scholar specializing in international law and human rights. She has made significant contributions to the field, particularly through her role as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, a position she has held since May first, twenty twenty-two. Albanese is notably the first woman to occupy this role, reflecting her pioneering spirit in a challenging arena.

Throughout her tenure, Albanese has been an outspoken critic of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. In her inaugural report, she urged UN member states to devise a comprehensive plan aimed at ending the occupation and addressing the apartheid situation. Following the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, she called for an immediate ceasefire, highlighting the grave risks of ethnic cleansing faced by Palestinians in Gaza. In March twenty twenty-four, she presented alarming findings to the UN Human Rights Council, asserting that Israel's actions in Gaza constituted genocide.

She served as an affiliate scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University until late twenty twenty-five, when her affiliation was terminated due to US sanctions imposed under Executive Order fourteen thousand two hundred three. Currently, she is a senior advisor on Migration and Forced Displacement at the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development, continuing her advocacy for human rights and social justice.
