Francesco Melzi

Francesco Melzi, an esteemed Italian painter, was born into the noble family of Milan in Lombardy in the year fourteen ninety-two. His artistic journey began under the tutelage of the legendary Leonardo da Vinci, where he not only honed his skills but also formed a deep and lasting friendship with the master.

Throughout his career, Melzi served as Leonardo's closest assistant, immersing himself in the intricacies of the art world. Following the death of his mentor, he took on the significant role of literary executor for Leonardo's extensive body of work. This responsibility led him to compile a manuscript known as the Codex Urbinas, which meticulously organized Leonardo's notes and ideas.

The Codex Urbinas would later become a crucial resource for future generations, serving as the foundation for the Trattato della Pittura, or Treatise on Painting. This influential work was published posthumously, thanks to Melzi's dedication to preserving and sharing Leonardo's artistic legacy.
