Francis James Child

Francis James Child, born on February first, eighteen twenty-five, was a distinguished American scholar and educator renowned for his contributions to the fields of philology and musicology. He served as the Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard University, where he made significant strides in the study of English poetry.

In eighteen seventy-six, Child was appointed as Harvard's first Professor of English, a role that enabled him to dedicate himself to academic research. It was during this pivotal period that he embarked on the monumental project of compiling the Child Ballads, a collection of English and Scottish ballads that would later bear his name.

The Child Ballads were published in five volumes between eighteen eighty-two and eighteen ninety-eight. Although Child's primary focus was on literary scholarship rather than the musical aspects of the ballads, his work has had a lasting impact on the study of English-language folk music, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in the field.
