Francis Marion Beynon

Francis Marion Beynon, born on May twenty-sixth, eighteen eighty-four, was a notable Canadian journalist, feminist, and pacifist. She made significant contributions to the Manitoba women’s movement as the influential editor of the women’s pages of the Grain Growers’ Guide. Through her editorial work, Beynon became a prominent voice advocating for political equality, women’s property rights, and social reform.

Her commitment to pacifism during the First World War positioned her as one of the most controversial figures in prairie journalism. This outspoken stance ultimately led to her dismissal from her editorial role in nineteen seventeen, highlighting the tensions between her beliefs and the prevailing sentiments of the time.

Beynon is perhaps best known for her semi-autobiographical novel, Aleta Day, published in nineteen nineteen. This work delves into the social and political tensions of her era, reflecting her experiences and the struggles faced by women in society.
