Francis P. Duffy

Francis P. Duffy, born on May second, eighteen seventy-one, was a remarkable figure in both military and religious spheres. As a Canadian American soldier and Catholic priest, he dedicated his life to serving others, particularly during times of conflict.

Best known for his role as a military chaplain for the 69th Infantry Regiment, affectionately known as the 'Fighting 69th,' Duffy's service was deeply intertwined with the Irish-American community of New York City. His military career began with the Spanish–American War in eighteen ninety-eight, but it was during World War I, from nineteen seventeen to nineteen eighteen, that he truly distinguished himself.

Duffy's bravery on the Western Front in France was unparalleled. He often found himself in the thick of battle, accompanying litter bearers to recover wounded soldiers. His commitment to his fellow soldiers earned him the distinction of being the most highly decorated cleric in the history of the United States Army.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Duffy Square, located in the northern half of New York City's Times Square, was named in his honor, ensuring that his legacy endures in the heart of the city.
