Francisco Balagtas

Francisco Balagtas y de la Cruz, born on April 2, 1788, is celebrated as one of the most significant figures in Filipino literature. His contributions during the Spanish colonial period have left an indelible mark on the Tagalog language and its literary heritage. Balagtas is best known for his epic poem, Florante at Laura, which is often regarded as his magnum opus and a cornerstone of Filipino literary tradition.

In 1849, Balagtas adopted the surname Baltazar, a requirement set forth by Governor-General Narciso Claveria y Zaldua, which mandated that the native population adopt standardized surnames. This change has led to some confusion, with his name occasionally misspelled as Baltasar and misinterpreted as a pen name.

Throughout his life, Balagtas's work has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of Filipino poetry and prose. His legacy continues to inspire generations of writers and poets, solidifying his status as a literary laureate of the Philippines.
