Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Francisco de Almeida

Dom Francisco de Almeida, born around 1450, was a distinguished Portuguese nobleman whose legacy as an explorer and soldier is well-remembered. He served as a trusted counsellor to King John II of Portugal, showcasing his military prowess during the wars against the Moors and playing a significant role in the conquest of Granada in 1492.

In 1505, Almeida was appointed the first governor and viceroy of the Portuguese State of India, a pivotal position that allowed him to shape the course of Portuguese colonial ambitions in the region. His strategic acumen was evident in 1509 when he achieved a decisive victory at the naval Battle of Diu, which established Portuguese dominance in the Indian Ocean.

Tragically, Almeida's life was cut short in 1510 during a conflict with indigenous peoples at the Cape of Good Hope. This loss was compounded by the earlier death of his only son, Lourenço de Almeida, who was killed in the Battle of Chaul, marking a profound personal tragedy amidst his military achievements.
