Francisco Guterres

Francisco Guterres, widely recognized as Lú-Olo, was born on September seventh, nineteen fifty-four. He is a prominent East Timorese politician who made history by serving as the sixth president of East Timor from two thousand seventeen to two thousand twenty-two. His political journey is marked by his leadership as the president of the Fretilin party and his role as the inaugural president of the National Parliament of East Timor from two thousand two to two thousand seven.

Guterres first entered the presidential race as the Fretilin candidate in the two thousand seven and two thousand twelve elections. Despite his efforts, he faced defeat in the second round against independent candidates on both occasions. However, his political fortunes changed in two thousand seventeen when he contested the presidential election again, securing victory with the backing of former prime minister Xanana Gusmão and the CNRT.

In two thousand twenty-two, Guterres sought re-election for a second term but was met with a significant defeat in the second round by Ramos-Horta. Throughout his political career, he has been recognized as a centre-left politician, advocating for the interests of his constituents and contributing to the development of East Timor.
