François Bayrou

François Bayrou, born on May 25, 1951, is a prominent French politician known for his centrist views and extensive political career. He has held various significant positions, including serving as the Prime Minister of France from December 2024 to September 2025. Bayrou has been a key figure in French politics, presiding over the European Democratic Party since 2004 and leading the Democratic Movement since 2007.

His political journey began in the National Assembly, where he represented Pyrénées-Atlantiques from 1986 to 2012, with brief interruptions. He also served as Minister of National Education from 1993 to 1997 in three successive governments. Additionally, Bayrou was a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2002 and has been the mayor of Pau from 2014 to 2026.

Bayrou was a candidate in the presidential elections of 2002, 2007, and 2012, showcasing his ambition for the highest office in France. Although he was speculated to run in the 2017 election, he chose to support Emmanuel Macron instead. Following Macron's victory, Bayrou was appointed Minister of State and Minister of Justice, but he resigned in June 2017 amid an investigation into the Democratic Movement's employment practices.

His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by challenges, culminating in a vote of no confidence that led to his resignation in September 2025. Despite his efforts, polls indicated that he had become the most unpopular prime minister under the Fifth Republic, a testament to the complexities of his political career.
