Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of François Bernier

François Bernier, born on September twenty-fifth, sixteen twenty in Joué-Etiau, Anjou, was a multifaceted French physician, philosopher, writer, explorer, and anthropologist. His extensive travels in India from October fourteen, sixteen fifty-eight to February twenty, sixteen seventy marked a significant period in his life, during which he immersed himself in the rich cultural tapestry of the Mughal Empire.

In sixteen eighty-four, Bernier published his groundbreaking work, "Nouvelle division de la terre par les différentes espèces ou races qui l'habitent," which is recognized as the first post-Classical classification of humans into distinct races. This publication laid the groundwork for future anthropological studies and showcased his keen observational skills during his time in India.

Bernier's literary contributions also include "Travels in the Mughal Empire," a detailed account of his experiences and observations during the reigns of Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb. This work is enriched by insights from prominent Mughal courtiers, providing a unique perspective on the historical events of the time.

In addition to his explorations, Bernier was a dedicated scholar who abridged and translated the philosophical writings of his friend Pierre Gassendi from Latin into French. His initial editions of "Abregé de la Philosophie de Gassendi" were published in Paris in sixteen seventy-four and sixteen seventy-five, with a complete eight-volume edition released in Lyon in sixteen seventy-eight. Despite his faithful rendering of Gassendi's ideas, Bernier expressed reservations about some of the philosopher's concepts in his later work, "Doutes de Mr. Bernier sur quelques-uns des principaux Chapitres de son Abregé de la Philosophie de Gassendi," published in sixteen eighty-two.
