François Christophe de Kellermann

François Christophe de Kellermann, born on May twenty-eighth, seventeen thirty-five, emerged from a noble Saxon family in Alsace. His military career began in seventeen fifty, and he quickly distinguished himself during the Seven Years' War, showcasing his leadership and tactical prowess.

As the French Revolutionary Wars unfolded, Kellermann embraced the revolutionary ideals and rose through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant general in seventeen eighty-nine. His most notable achievement came at the Battle of Valmy, where he led the French army to a significant victory against the Prussian forces, solidifying his reputation as a formidable military commander.

Despite his successes, Kellermann faced challenges during the Reign of Terror, where he was imprisoned on suspicions of disloyalty. However, he was acquitted and reinstated after the fall of Robespierre, continuing to serve with distinction. Under Napoleon, he was appointed as one of the original eighteen Marshals of the Empire and later became a senator and duke.

Even as younger generals began to take the forefront, Kellermann remained an invaluable military administrator and advisor to Napoleon. Following the restoration of Louis XVIII, he retained his titles and was honored as a peer. His legacy endures, with his name inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe, a testament to his contributions to French military history.
