François Coty

François Coty, born on May third, eighteen seventy-four, was a pioneering French perfumer and entrepreneur who revolutionized the fragrance industry. He founded the Coty perfume company, which has grown into a multinational powerhouse. His career took off in nineteen oh four with the launch of his first successful fragrance, La Rose Jacqueminot, marking the beginning of his journey in the world of perfumes.

By nineteen ten, Coty had expanded his business internationally, establishing subsidiaries in major cities such as Moscow, London, and New York. However, the Russian Revolution in nineteen seventeen led to the confiscation of his assets in Moscow, turning him into a staunch opponent of Communism for the rest of his life. His financial success following World War I positioned him among the wealthiest individuals in France, enabling him to become a significant patron of the arts and a collector of historic works and properties.

In nineteen twenty-two, Coty acquired control of the influential daily newspaper Le Figaro. Concerned about the rise of socialism and Communism in France, he launched two additional daily papers in nineteen twenty-eight to counteract these movements. His political ambitions were further realized when he was elected senator of Corsica in nineteen twenty-three and served as the mayor of Ajaccio from nineteen thirty-one to nineteen thirty-four.

Throughout his life, Coty was deeply involved in right-wing politics, funding various movements to combat the spread of Communism. In nineteen thirty-three, disillusioned with the political landscape, he published a reform of the State and established his own political movement, Solidarité française, which took a more radical turn after his passing. At the time of his death at the age of sixty, Coty's fortune had significantly dwindled due to his divorce, the financial burdens of his press empire, and the fallout from the economic crisis of nineteen twenty-nine.
