François Legault

François Legault, born on May twenty-six, nineteen fifty-seven, is a prominent Canadian politician and businessman who has held the esteemed position of the thirty-second premier of Quebec since two thousand eighteen. As a founding member of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), he has been instrumental in shaping the party's direction since its inception in two thousand eleven, leading it until his resignation in two thousand twenty-six.

Legault's political journey began as a member of the National Assembly (MNA) for the Lanaudière region riding of L'Assomption. His earlier political career saw him serve as a member of the Parti Québécois (PQ), where he was first elected in the nineteen ninety-eight provincial election for the riding of Rousseau. He was re-elected in subsequent elections and held significant roles, including minister of education and minister of health, before resigning his seat in two thousand nine.

After a brief hiatus, Legault returned to the National Assembly in two thousand twelve, winning the election for L'Assomption and securing re-election in two thousand fourteen. Under his leadership, the CAQ achieved majority governments in the two thousand eighteen and two thousand twenty-two provincial elections, marking a significant shift in Quebec's political landscape as the first government not affiliated with the Quebec Liberal Party or the Parti Québécois since the nineteen seventy Union Nationale government.

During his tenure as premier, Legault faced the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and championed legislation aimed at promoting the French language and Quebec identity, including amendments to the Charter of the French Language. He also advocated for increased autonomy from the federal government. However, amid declining opinion polling, he announced his intention to resign on January fourteenth, two thousand twenty-six, ahead of the upcoming election, remaining in office until Christine Fréchette is sworn in as his successor in April two thousand twenty-six.
