François-Xavier Ortoli

François-Xavier Ortoli, born on February sixteenth, nineteen twenty-five, was a prominent French politician and businessperson who made significant contributions to European governance. He served as the fifth president of the European Commission from nineteen seventy-three to nineteen seventy-seven, a pivotal role during a transformative period in European integration.

His political career began in earnest when he was appointed Minister of the Economy of France from nineteen sixty-eight to nineteen sixty-nine under Prime Minister Maurice Couve de Murville. Ortoli's expertise in finance and economics was further recognized as he held various ministerial positions, showcasing his commitment to public service.

During World War II, Ortoli served with the Free French Forces, earning several decorations including the Croix de Guerre, Médaille militaire, and Médaille de la Résistance for his bravery. His dedication to his country and to European unity was evident throughout his career, particularly during his tenure as one of the two French European Commissioners from nineteen seventy-three to nineteen eighty-five.

In addition to his political achievements, Ortoli was a successful business leader, serving as the director of Marceau Investissements and later as President of Total. His legacy extends to his family, as he was the grandfather of Antoine-Xavier Troesch, a notable investment banker. Ortoli's influence in European industrial policy was further solidified when he attended the founding meeting of the European Round Table of Industrialists in Paris in nineteen eighty-three alongside Étienne Davignon.
