Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon

Françoise d'Aubigné, born on November twenty-seventh, sixteen thirty-five, emerged from humble beginnings as a member of an impoverished Huguenot noble family. Her marriage to the poet Paul Scarron in sixteen fifty-two opened the doors to the vibrant Parisian high society. Following her husband's death in sixteen sixty, Françoise's fortunes took a turn for the better through her association with Madame de Montespan, the mistress of King Louis XIV, who entrusted her with the care of the king's illegitimate children.

By the late sixteen seventies, Françoise had risen to prominence, effectively replacing Montespan as the king's official mistress. In sixteen seventy-five, she was granted the title of Marquise de Maintenon, a recognition of her influence and status. Her role expanded further after the death of Queen Maria Theresa in sixteen eighty-three, when she married Louis XIV in a private ceremony, becoming one of the most powerful figures in France.

Despite never being crowned queen, Madame de Maintenon wielded significant political influence as a close advisor to the king and as the governess of the royal children. Her devout Catholic faith profoundly impacted Louis XIV, leading him to abandon his open mistresses and embrace a more pious lifestyle. In sixteen eighty-six, she founded the Maison royale de Saint-Louis, a school dedicated to the education of girls from impoverished noble families, marking a significant advancement in female education during the Ancien Régime.

After the death of Louis XIV in seventeen fifteen, Madame de Maintenon retired to Saint-Cyr, where she lived out her remaining years. She passed away on April fifteenth, seventeen nineteen, at the age of eighty-three, leaving behind a legacy of influence and reform in both education and the royal court.
