Frank Bainimarama

Frank Bainimarama, born on April twenty-seventh, nineteen fifty-four, is a notable Fijian politician and former naval officer who held the position of Prime Minister of Fiji from two thousand seven until two thousand twenty-two. His political journey began with his military career, where he joined the Fijian Navy in nineteen seventy-five, ascending through the ranks to become a rear admiral by the time he relinquished command in two thousand fourteen.

In two thousand six, Bainimarama instigated a coup that ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, subsequently restoring Ratu Josefa Iloilo as president and himself as prime minister. He founded the FijiFirst party in two thousand fourteen, promising a return to democracy, which culminated in his party winning a majority in the two thousand fourteen general elections. Bainimarama was sworn in as prime minister, and he successfully retained his position after the two thousand eighteen elections.

Despite his political successes, Bainimarama's tenure was not without controversy. After the two thousand twenty-two elections, where FijiFirst won a plurality but could not form a government, he stepped down as prime minister, marking the end of his sixteen-year rule. Following his resignation from Parliament and as opposition leader in March two thousand twenty-three, he faced legal challenges, including charges of abuse of office related to an investigation at the University of the South Pacific.

On March fourteenth, two thousand twenty-four, Bainimarama was convicted of attempting to pervert the course of justice, leading to a one-year prison sentence handed down on May ninth, two thousand twenty-four.
