Frank Fetter

Frank Fetter, born on March eighth, eighteen sixty-three, was a prominent American economist and a distinguished figure in the Austrian School of economic thought. His influential work, The Principles of Economics, played a pivotal role in fostering a greater interest in Austrian economic theories across the United States, particularly those of renowned economists such as Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, Friedrich von Wieser, and Ludwig von Mises.

Fetter was not only a prolific writer but also an engaging university teacher who contributed significantly to economic discourse. He is well-known for his intellectual debates, notably with Alfred Marshall, where he presented a theoretical reassessment of land as capital. His arguments were instrumental in shifting mainstream economic thought away from the Georgist perspective, which posited that land is a unique factor of production necessitating a specialized theory of ground rent.

A staunch advocate of the subjective theory of value, Fetter emphasized the critical role of time preference in economic theory. He notably challenged Irving Fisher's departure from the pure time preference theory of interest, which Fisher had originally articulated in his nineteen hundred and seven publication, The Rate of Interest.
