Frank McKinney

Frank Edward McKinney Jr., born on November 3, 1938, in Indianapolis, Indiana, was a remarkable American swimmer who made significant contributions to the sport. He was a pioneer in modern backstroke techniques, following in the footsteps of Yoshi Oyakawa, and became the youngest member of the U.S. national swim team that set a world record in the 4×100-meter medley relay at the 1955 Pan American Games. At just sixteen, he also clinched a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, showcasing his exceptional talent.

McKinney's swimming career continued to flourish as he captured a bronze medal in the men's 100-meter backstroke at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. His prowess in the pool was further highlighted at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, where he earned a silver medal in the same event and contributed to a gold medal victory for the U.S. team in the men's 4×100-meter medley relay.

After graduating from Indiana University in 1961, McKinney transitioned into the banking industry, eventually becoming the president of Bank One of Indiana. His leadership extended to the Columbus, Ohio-based Banc One Corporation, where he served as president while maintaining his role as CEO of the Indiana subsidiary. Tragically, McKinney's life was cut short at the age of fifty-three when he died in a mid-air collision between two aircraft on September 11, 1992.

McKinney's legacy lives on, not only through his achievements in swimming but also through his impactful career in banking. He is laid to rest in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, leaving behind a story of excellence and dedication in both sports and business.
