Frank Stack

Frank Stack, born on October thirty-first, nineteen thirty-seven, is a prominent American underground cartoonist and artist. Known for his work under the pseudonym Foolbert Sturgeon, Stack sought to navigate the challenges of living in the Bible Belt, where he published what many consider the first underground comic, The Adventures of Jesus, in nineteen sixty-four.

Stack's artistic journey has been significantly influenced by renowned figures such as Gustave Doré, Roy Crane, and V. T. Hamlin. His unique style, characterized by a sketchy aesthetic, reflects his background as an etcher. He has gained recognition as a printmaker, specializing in etchings and lithographs, with his on-site etching techniques even featured in American Artist magazine.

In addition to his printmaking, Stack's oil paintings and watercolors predominantly showcase landscape and figure compositions, further demonstrating his versatility as an artist. Residing in Columbia, Missouri, he has also made a lasting impact as a longtime professor at the University of Missouri, where he has inspired countless students with his artistic vision.
