Frankie Fredericks

Frankie Fredericks, born on October 2, 1967, is a distinguished former track and field athlete from Namibia, renowned for his exceptional prowess in the 100 metres and 200 metres events. Over the course of his illustrious career, he secured four silver medals at the Olympic Games, achieving this remarkable feat in both the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. His accomplishments made him Namibia's first Olympic medalist, a title he held until Christine Mboma earned a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Fredericks' accolades extend beyond the Olympics; he has clinched gold medals at the World Championships, World Indoor Championships, All-Africa Games, and Commonwealth Games. Notably, he set the world indoor record for the 200 metres with an impressive time of 19.92 seconds in 1996. His remarkable speed is further highlighted by the fact that he has broken the twenty-second barrier for the 200 metres on twenty-four occasions.

In the Olympic final held in Atlanta, Georgia, in August 1996, Fredericks recorded a stunning time of 19.68 seconds, showcasing his extraordinary talent. He also holds the distinction of being the oldest man to have broken twenty seconds for the 200 metres, achieving this milestone on July 12, 2002, in Rome at the age of thirty-four years and two hundred eighty-three days.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Fredericks has taken on a significant role in the sports community as a council member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). However, his career has not been without controversy; on March 3, 2017, he was implicated in the IAAF corruption scandal due to a substantial cash payment he received in 2009, with the investigation still ongoing.
