He was not only a prominent figure in the realm of art history but also the father of historian Bernhard von Kugler, who lived from eighteen thirty-seven to eighteen ninety-eight.

Kugler's academic journey began at the University of Berlin, where he immersed himself in literature, music, and the visual arts. After further studies in Heidelberg, he returned to Berlin in eighteen twenty-seven to pursue architecture. By eighteen thirty-one, he had earned his doctorate under the guidance of Ernst Heinrich Toelken, presenting a dissertation on Werinher of Tegernsee.

In eighteen thirty-three, Kugler was appointed as a professor of art history at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. His influence extended beyond the classroom, as he later took on a significant role in the Ministry of Culture, overseeing Prussian art. Among his notable students was the renowned cultural historian Jakob Burckhardt.
