Franz von Schober

Franz Adolf Friedrich Schober, born on May seventeenth, 1796, at Torup Castle in Malmö, Sweden, was a multifaceted artist known for his contributions as a poet, librettist, writer, stage actor, and composer. He was born to Austrian parents and received his education at the Schnepfenthal Salzmann School, the Akademisches Gymnasium in Vienna, and Kremsmünster Abbey. His return to Vienna marked the beginning of a significant chapter in his life, where he immersed himself in philosophy and formed lasting friendships with notable figures such as composer Franz Schubert, poet Johann Mayrhofer, and painters Leopold Kupelwieser and Moritz von Schwind.

Schober's artistic journey led him to the theatre in Breslau, where he performed as an actor under the pseudonym 'Torupson' between the years of eighteen twenty-three and eighteen twenty-five. His connections extended to the legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven, whom he visited during Beethoven's final days, alongside Schubert. In the 1840s, Schober maintained a close relationship with the renowned pianist and composer Franz Liszt, further enriching his artistic network.

In eighteen fifty-six, Schober married the author Thekla von Gumpert, and the couple subsequently resided in various cities, including Budapest, Munich, and Dresden. Throughout his career, Schober made significant contributions to the world of music and literature, most notably writing lyric poetry and the libretto for Franz Schubert's opera 'Alfonso und Estrella' in eighteen twenty-one, along with other vocal pieces that showcased his creative prowess.
