Fred Akuffo, born on March 21, 1937, was a prominent Ghanaian soldier and politician who played a significant role in the country's military and political landscape during the late 1970s.
He served as the Chief of the Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces from 1976 to 1978, showcasing his leadership and military acumen. His tenure was marked by a commitment to national defense and military strategy.
In 1978, Akuffo ascended to the position of chairman of the ruling Supreme Military Council, becoming the sixth military head of state of Ghana. His rise to power came through a palace coup against General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, reflecting the turbulent political climate of the time.
However, his leadership was short-lived, as he was overthrown and executed in another military coup less than a year later, highlighting the precarious nature of military rule in Ghana.
