Fred Hampton

Fredrick Allen Hampton Sr. was born on August 30, 1948, and emerged as a prominent African American activist and revolutionary socialist in Chicago during his late teens and early twenties. As the deputy chairman of the national Black Panther Party and the chair of the Illinois chapter, he played a pivotal role in advocating for social justice and equality.

Hampton was the visionary founder of the Rainbow Coalition, a groundbreaking multicultural political organization that sought to unite various marginalized groups, including the Black Panthers, Young Patriots, and the Young Lords. This coalition aimed to combat racism and classism while fostering alliances among major Chicago street gangs to promote social change and reduce violence.

His activism did not go unnoticed by the authorities; in 1967, the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified him as a radical threat. The FBI attempted to undermine his efforts through disinformation campaigns and infiltration. Tragically, on December 4, 1969, Hampton was killed in a predawn raid at his Chicago apartment, where law enforcement fired over one hundred shots, resulting in his death at the young age of twenty-one.

The aftermath of his death led to a civil lawsuit for wrongful death, which was settled in 1982 for one million eight hundred fifty thousand dollars. This settlement was a reflection of the ongoing struggle for justice and the revelations surrounding the FBI's COINTELPRO program, which many scholars now view as a deliberate assassination orchestrated by federal authorities.
