Fred Sasakamoose, born on December twenty-fifth, nineteen thirty-three, was a pioneering Canadian professional ice hockey player. He made history as one of the first Indigenous players in the National Hockey League and notably the first First Nations player with treaty status. His brief stint in the NHL included eleven games with the Chicago Black Hawks during the nineteen fifty-three to fifty-four season.
Following his time in the NHL, Sasakamoose dedicated his career to various minor leagues from nineteen fifty-three to nineteen sixty. His contributions to the sport were significant, paving the way for future generations of Indigenous athletes in hockey.
Beyond his playing days, Fred Sasakamoose became actively involved in Indigenous affairs, serving as chief of the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation. His leadership and advocacy for Indigenous rights earned him recognition, culminating in his appointment as a member of the Order of Canada.
