Fred Tootell

Fred Tootell, born on September ninth, nineteen oh two in Lawrence, Massachusetts, was a remarkable American athlete renowned for his prowess in the hammer throw. He made history at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, where he clinched the gold medal, becoming the first American-born athlete to achieve this feat in the event after a streak of Irish-born champions.

A graduate of Bowdoin College in nineteen twenty-three, Tootell not only excelled in athletics but also played American football as a tackle. To maintain his Olympic eligibility, he enrolled at Tufts University School of Medicine, showcasing his commitment to both sports and education.

In nineteen twenty-five, Tootell began a long and impactful career at the University of Rhode Island, where he served as a professor of physical education and coached various teams, including tennis, track, and cross country. His leadership extended to the role of athletic director from nineteen fifty-three to nineteen sixty-two. The Tootell Physical Education Center at the university stands as a testament to his contributions, alongside his home, the Tootell House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tootell's legacy continued beyond his passing in Wakefield, Rhode Island, as he was posthumously inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in nineteen sixty-eight. His personal life included a marriage to Anne Parsons in nineteen twenty-six, followed by a divorce in nineteen thirty-five, and later, he married Lucy Rawlings Tootell.
