Frédéric de Lafresnaye

Frédéric de Lafresnaye, born on July twenty-fourth, seventeen eighty-three, was a distinguished French ornithologist and entomologist hailing from an aristocratic lineage in Normandy. His early fascination with natural history, particularly in the realm of entomology, laid the groundwork for his later pursuits in ornithology.

Initially captivated by a collection of European birds, Lafresnaye shifted his focus to the study of avian species. Throughout his career, he described numerous new bird species, often collaborating with fellow naturalist Alcide d'Orbigny. His dedication to ornithology culminated in the accumulation of an impressive collection of over eight thousand bird skins, which he meticulously curated at his residence.

Upon his passing, Lafresnaye's extensive collection caught the attention of American collector Henry Bryant, who purchased it and generously donated it to the Boston Natural History Society. This invaluable collection was later transferred to the Museum of Comparative Zoology in nineteen fourteen, ensuring that Lafresnaye's contributions to the field of ornithology would be preserved for future generations.

Several avian species commemorate Lafresnaye's legacy, including Lafresnaye's piculet, Lafresnaye's woodcreeper, and Lafresnaye's vanga. Additionally, the monotypic hummingbird genus Lafresnaya stands as a testament to his significant impact on the study of birds.
