Frederick Ashton

Frederick Ashton, born on September seventeenth, nineteen oh four, was a distinguished British ballet dancer and choreographer whose influence shaped the landscape of English ballet. Despite facing opposition from his conventional middle-class family, he pursued his passion for dance, initially training under the tutelage of Léonide Massine and later with Marie Rambert. It was Rambert who encouraged him to explore choreography in nineteen twenty-six, a decision that would lead him to fame.

Ashton served as the chief choreographer to Ninette de Valois from nineteen thirty-five until his retirement in nineteen sixty-three, during which time he was integral to the evolution of the company known successively as the Vic-Wells Ballet, the Sadler's Wells Ballet, and the Royal Ballet. Following de Valois's departure, he took on the role of director, a position he held until his own retirement in nineteen seventy.

Renowned for his innovative contributions, Ashton is credited with establishing a distinctly English genre of ballet. His repertoire includes celebrated works such as Façade, created in nineteen thirty-one, Symphonic Variations from nineteen forty-six, Cinderella in nineteen forty-eight, La fille mal gardée in nineteen sixty, Monotones I and II from nineteen sixty-five, Enigma Variations in nineteen sixty-eight, and the ballet film The Tales of Beatrix Potter released in nineteen seventy-one.
