Frederick Chiluba

Frederick Chiluba, born on April 30, 1943, was a prominent Zambian politician who served as the second president of Zambia from 1991 to 2002. His political journey began as a trade union leader, where he gained significant influence and recognition. In 1991, he made history by winning the country's first multi-party presidential election as the candidate for the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD), defeating the long-standing President Kenneth Kaunda.

Chiluba's leadership was marked by his re-election in 1996, which solidified his position in Zambian politics. However, his tenure faced challenges, and in 2001, he was unable to seek a third term. The MMD nominated former Vice President Levy Mwanawasa as their candidate, who subsequently succeeded Chiluba.

After leaving office, Chiluba's legacy became clouded by allegations of corruption, leading to a lengthy investigation and trial. Despite the serious accusations, he was acquitted in 2009, allowing him to reclaim his reputation. His life and career remain a significant part of Zambia's political history.
