Frederick Delius

Frederick Delius, born on January twenty-ninth, eighteen sixty-two in Bradford, England, emerged as a notable composer despite his family's mercantile background. Resisting the pull of commerce, he was sent to Florida in eighteen eighty-four to manage an orange plantation. However, his passion for music soon overshadowed his managerial duties, leading him to return to Europe in eighteen eighty-six.

During his brief time in Florida, Delius was profoundly influenced by African-American music, which ignited his desire to compose. After a short period of formal musical study in Germany, he dedicated himself to a full-time career as a composer, eventually settling in Paris and later in Grez-sur-Loing with his wife, Jelka. This idyllic setting became their home for the rest of their lives, save for the disruptions of the First World War.

Delius's early successes were primarily in Germany, where conductors like Hans Haym championed his work from the late eighteen nineties. In Britain, however, his music did not gain regular concert appearances until nineteen oh seven, when Thomas Beecham began to promote it. Beecham's efforts included the full premiere of A Mass of Life in London in nineteen oh nine and the staging of the opera A Village Romeo and Juliet at Covent Garden in nineteen ten.

Despite his growing recognition, Delius faced significant health challenges after nineteen eighteen, suffering from the effects of syphilis, which led to paralysis and blindness. Nevertheless, he managed to complete several late compositions between nineteen twenty-eight and nineteen thirty-two with the assistance of amanuensis Eric Fenby. His music, characterized by unique orchestration and chromatic harmony, reflects the influences of both American and European styles.

Although Delius's music has experienced intermittent popularity and faced critical scrutiny, the Delius Society, established in nineteen sixty-two, continues to celebrate his legacy. The society promotes awareness of his life and works and sponsors the annual Delius Prize competition for young musicians.
