Frederick William I of Prussia

Frederick William I, known as the Soldier King, was born on August 14, 1688, in Berlin. Raised by the Huguenot governess Marthe de Roucoulle, his formative years were marked by a keen awareness of the political landscape, particularly during the Great Northern War's plague outbreak in Prussia. This experience ignited his resolve to combat corruption and inefficiency within the government.

Ascending to the throne in 1713, Frederick William I ruled as King in Prussia and Elector of Brandenburg until his death in 1740. His reign was characterized by significant military reforms, notably doubling the size of the Prussian Army and expanding the officer corps to three thousand. A staunch advocate of absolute monarchy, he prioritized state development and financial reorganization, implementing taxes and strict regulations on public servants to enhance governance.

Despite his effective administration, Frederick William I's rule was tempered by a harsh demeanor, exacerbated by ongoing health issues. He engaged in colonial affairs but favored military expansion over colonial investments, leading to the sale of Prussian overseas colonies. His notable achievements included the establishment of the Canton system and the conquest of the port of Stettin, which solidified Prussia's status as a regional power.

Frederick William I's death on May 31, 1740, marked the conclusion of a transformative reign that emphasized military and administrative reform. He was succeeded by his son, Frederick the Great, who would continue to shape the future of Prussia.
