Friedrich List

Friedrich List, born on August sixth, seventeen eighty-nine, was a prominent German economist, diplomat, and political theorist. He is best known for developing the nationalist theory of political economy, which had a significant impact in both Europe and the United States. As a forefather of the German historical school of economics, List advocated for the Zollverein, a pan-German customs union, emphasizing the importance of national interests in economic policy.

List's economic philosophy centered around the idea of raising tariffs on imported goods while promoting free trade for domestic products. He argued that the costs associated with tariffs should be viewed as investments in a nation's future productivity, a perspective that resonated with many and influenced the American school of economics.

In addition to his economic contributions, List was a political liberal who collaborated with notable figures such as Karl von Rotteck and Carl Theodor Welcker on the Rotteck-Welckersches Staatslexikon. This encyclopedia of political science championed constitutional liberalism and played a crucial role in shaping the Vormärz period in Europe, where liberal and nationalist ideas were closely intertwined.

Emmanuel Todd has recognized List as a precursor to John Maynard Keynes, particularly in his advocacy for moderate or regulated capitalism. His work continues to be relevant, reflecting the ongoing dialogue between nationalism and economic policy.
