Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Friedrich Merz

Friedrich Merz, born on November eleventh, nineteen fifty-five, in Brilon, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a prominent German politician who has been serving as Chancellor of Germany since May sixth, twenty twenty-five. He has been the Leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since January twenty twenty-two, and prior to his chancellorship, he led the CDU/CSU parliamentary group as Leader of the Opposition in the Bundestag from February twenty twenty-two to May twenty twenty-five.

Merz's political journey began in nineteen seventy-two when he joined the Young Union. After completing his law degree in nineteen eighty-five, he worked as a judge and corporate lawyer before transitioning into full-time politics in nineteen eighty-nine, when he was elected to the European Parliament. Known for his staunch anti-communism stance during the late twentieth century, he has become a key figure representing the traditional conservative and pro-business factions within the CDU.

His influential book, 'Mehr Kapitalismus wagen' (Venturing More Capitalism), champions economic liberalism. After a successful term in the European Parliament, he was elected to the Bundestag, where he quickly established himself as a leading expert in financial policy. In the year two thousand, he became chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, competing directly with Angela Merkel for party leadership.

Following the two thousand two federal election, Merz stepped back from the political spotlight, focusing on his legal career and leaving parliament in two thousand nine. He returned to politics in twenty twenty-one, becoming CDU leader in December twenty twenty-one after two previous unsuccessful attempts. His leadership culminated in his candidacy for Chancellor in September twenty twenty-four, leading to a coalition government with the SPD after the CDU/CSU won a plurality of seats.

As Chancellor, Merz has prioritized fiscal responsibility and border security, while also addressing the designation of the AfD as extremist. He is a strong advocate for the European Union, NATO, and the liberal international order, identifying himself as a committed Transatlanticist. His vision includes a closer union in Europe and the establishment of a European army, reflecting his long-standing pro-American stance and his role as a former chairman of the Atlantik-Brücke association.
