Fritz Herkenrath

Fritz Herkenrath, born on September ninth, nineteen twenty-eight, was a distinguished football goalkeeper who represented West Germany at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Over the course of his international career, he earned twenty-one caps between nineteen fifty-four and nineteen fifty-eight, showcasing his skills on the global stage.

Herkenrath's club career was equally impressive. He joined Rot-Weiss Essen in nineteen fifty-two, where he played a pivotal role in leading the team to its pinnacle, winning a national championship in nineteen fifty-five. The following season, he helped Rot-Weiss Essen become the first German club to qualify for the prestigious European Cup, marking a significant achievement in the club's history.

Before his football career took off, Herkenrath initially played handball and started as a right winger. It was only after World War II that he transitioned to football, where he began his studies at the German Sport University Cologne. There, he met Sepp Herberger, who would later influence his career. In the early nineteen fifties, he played for 1. FC Köln, primarily as a second goalkeeper behind the Dutchman Frans de Munck.

Known affectionately as the 'flying schoolmaster' due to his profession as a teacher, Herkenrath retired from professional football in nineteen sixty after an impressive three hundred thirty-six games in the Oberliga West. Following his retirement, he became a professor at the college of education in Aachen, contributing to the development of future generations. Fritz Herkenrath passed away on April eighteenth, two thousand sixteen, at the age of eighty-seven.
