Fritz Strobl

Fritz Strobl, born on August 24, 1972, is a celebrated former World Cup alpine ski racer known for his remarkable achievements on the slopes. He gained international fame when he clinched the gold medal in the downhill event at the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, showcasing his exceptional talent on the challenging Grizzly course at Snowbasin.

Throughout his illustrious career, Strobl competed on the World Cup circuit for an impressive fifteen seasons, during which he secured nine victories—seven in downhill and two in super-G. His consistency was evident with thirty-one podium finishes and one hundred ten top ten finishes, marking him as one of the elite racers of his time.

Strobl's prowess was particularly highlighted in the downhill standings, where he finished second in both 2002 and 2006, and third in 1997 and 2001. His best overall finish came in 2005, where he placed fifth. Notably, he is among the few racers to have won the prestigious Hahnenkamm downhill at Kitzbühel twice, in 1997 and 2000, and he still holds the record for the fastest time on the full Streif course, clocking in at one minute and fifty-one point fifty-eight seconds in 1997.

After a successful career, Strobl retired from international competition at the age of thirty-four, concluding his final season in 2007. His last race on March 15, 2007, was memorable as he descended the Lenzerheide super-G course dressed as Mozart, leaving a lasting impression on fans and fellow competitors alike.
