Gabriel Báthory

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Gabriel Báthory

Gabriel Báthory, born on August fifteenth, fifteen eighty-nine, was a prominent figure in the history of Transylvania, serving as its prince from sixteen oh eight to sixteen thirteen. He was born into the Roman Catholic branch of the Báthory family, which had deep ties to the region, being closely related to four rulers of the Principality of Transylvania, a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire.

After the death of his father, Stephen Báthory, in sixteen oh one, Gabriel became the ward of his childless guardian, who belonged to the Protestant branch of the family. This guardian converted him to Calvinism, and by sixteen oh five, Gabriel had inherited a significant portion of his guardian's estates, making him one of the wealthiest landowners in Transylvania and Royal Hungary.

In February sixteen oh eight, Gabriel allied with the Hajdús, irregular troops stationed along the borders, and laid claim to the principality against the elderly prince, Sigismund Rákóczi. The Diet of Transylvania elected him prince without resistance, and both the Sublime Porte and the Habsburg ruler Matthias II recognized his election. However, his reign was marked by controversy as he disregarded the privileges of the Transylvanian Saxons and seized their wealthiest town, Szeben, leading to an uprising in sixteen ten.

Gabriel's ambitions extended beyond Transylvania as he sought to expand his authority over Wallachia and engaged in negotiations with Matthias II, actions that angered the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I. In August sixteen thirteen, the Sultan decided to replace him with the exiled nobleman Gabriel Bethlen and sent troops to invade Transylvania. Unable to resist, the Diet dethroned Gabriel, who ultimately met a tragic end at the hands of Hajdú assassins.
