Gabriel Boric, born on February eleventh, nineteen eighty-six, is a prominent Chilean politician who made history as the thirty-seventh president of Chile, serving from 2022 to 2026. His political journey began as a student leader at the University of Chile, where he gained recognition during the significant protests of 2011, ultimately leading the student federation.
In 2013, Boric was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as an independent, marking the start of his political career. He was re-elected in 2017 as part of the Broad Front coalition, showcasing his growing influence. In 2018, he co-founded the Social Convergence party, which played a crucial role within the coalition before it evolved into a single political entity.
During the civil unrest in 2019, Boric was instrumental in negotiating the agreement that paved the way for the October 2020 constitutional referendum, a pivotal moment in Chile's political landscape. His ascent to the presidency came in December 2021 when he triumphed over José Antonio Kast, securing fifty-five point nine percent of the vote in a decisive second round.
Upon taking office, Boric became the youngest president in Chile's history. His presidency was marked by significant events, including his condemnation of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and his support for the proposed Political Constitution of the Republic of Chile. Despite his ambitious agenda, Boric faced challenges, including low approval ratings attributed to high crime rates and inflation, leading to his departure from office in March 2026.
