Gabrielius Landsbergis, born on January seventh, nineteen eighty-two, is a prominent Lithuanian politician and diplomat. He served as Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs from December twenty twenty until November twenty twenty-four, playing a crucial role in the Šimonytė Cabinet. His political journey includes a significant tenure as a Member of the Seimas from two thousand sixteen to two thousand twenty-four, where he represented the Centras–Žaliakalnis constituency.
Before his role in the Seimas, Landsbergis was a Member of the European Parliament from two thousand fourteen to two thousand sixteen, representing Lithuania within the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats). During his time in the European Parliament, he was actively involved in the Committee on International Trade and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence, where he focused on global trade and defense policy.
Since two thousand fifteen, he has held the position of Chairman of the Homeland Union (Lithuanian Christian Democrats), a center-right political party that emerged as a leading force in Lithuanian politics under his leadership. Following the party's second-place finish in the two thousand twenty-four parliamentary election, Landsbergis decided to step down as chairman and take a break from politics, declining a proportional-list seat in the Seimas.
As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Landsbergis was a staunch advocate for European integration, NATO solidarity, and the promotion of democratic values. His tenure was marked by Lithuania's unwavering support for Ukraine amidst the Russian invasion, as well as efforts to counter Russian influence in the region. He emphasized Lithuania's role in strengthening ties between the European Union and global democracies, while also working to diversify the country's economic partnerships and reduce reliance on authoritarian regimes.
