Gago Coutinho

Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho, born on February seventeenth, eighteen sixty-nine, was a distinguished Portuguese figure known for his multifaceted contributions as a geographer, cartographer, naval officer, historian, and aviator. His remarkable career spanned several fields, showcasing his diverse talents and dedication to exploration and knowledge.

One of Gago Coutinho's most notable achievements was his pioneering role in aviation. Alongside his compatriot Sacadura Cabral, he made history by becoming the first individuals to successfully cross the South Atlantic Ocean by air. This groundbreaking journey took place from March to June nineteen twenty-two, commencing in Lisbon, Portugal, and concluding in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, utilizing a seaplane variant of the British reconnaissance biplane, the Fairey III.

Gago Coutinho's legacy continues to be celebrated, particularly in June twenty-twenty-two, when the centenary of the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic was commemorated. In honor of his contributions to aviation and exploration, Faro Airport was officially renamed Gago Coutinho Airport, ensuring that his name and achievements will be remembered for generations to come.
