Gaito Gazdanov

Gaito Gazdanov, born on December sixth, nineteen hundred and three, was a prominent Russian émigré writer of Ossetian descent who made Paris his home. His literary journey began in France, where his first stories were published in nineteen twenty-six, marking the start of a significant career in prose writing and literary criticism.

Among his most celebrated works are the novels 'An Evening with Claire,' released in nineteen twenty-nine, and 'The Spectre of Alexander Wolf,' published in nineteen forty-eight. These works garnered attention from notable contemporaries such as Maxim Gorky, Ivan Bunin, and Vladislav Khodasevich, solidifying his reputation in the literary world.

During World War II, Gazdanov became an active member of the French Resistance, contributing to the fight against occupation. His commitment to freedom of expression continued post-war when he joined Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty as an editor in nineteen fifty-three.

Despite mastering the French language, Gazdanov remained devoted to his roots, continuing to write in Russian throughout his life. His unique perspective as an émigré and his rich cultural background influenced his storytelling, leaving a lasting impact on the literary landscape.
