Galeazzo Alessi

Galeazzo Alessi, born in 1512 in Perugia, was a prominent Italian architect celebrated across Europe for his unique architectural style, deeply influenced by ancient designs. His early education in drawing for civil and military architecture under the guidance of Giovanni Battista Caporali laid the foundation for his illustrious career.

Alessi spent a significant portion of his life in Genoa, where he played a crucial role in the urban planning of the city. His contributions included the layout of streets and the restoration of city walls, alongside the design of numerous palazzi that now stand as part of the World Heritage List. His remarkable ability to organize compositions on sloping sites set him apart from his contemporaries.

His architectural legacy extends beyond Genoa, with notable works in various Italian cities such as Ferrara, Bologna, Naples, and Milan, where he designed the facade of Santa Maria presso San Celso. Collaborating with Vignola, he contributed to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, which was the seventh largest Christian church of its time.

Alessi's influence reached beyond Italy, as he designed churches and palaces in France, Germany, and Flanders. Although he produced designs for El Escorial in Spain, his advancing age and declining health ultimately prevented him from executing these plans.
