Gamal Mubarak, born on December 27, 1963, is the younger son of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and former First Lady Suzanne Mubarak. Unlike his older brother Alaa, Gamal actively engaged in public life and began to exert influence over the political landscape of Egypt prior to the revolution in early 2011.
Before the revolution, he held the position of deputy secretary-general of the now-dissolved National Democratic Party and led its influential policies committee. His political career was marked by a growing presence in the public sphere, which set him apart from his brother.
In 2014 and 2015, Gamal, along with his father and brother, faced convictions for political corruption, specifically for diverting nearly twenty million dollars in state funds for personal use. This led to a three-year prison sentence. However, the EU Court of Justice later determined that the Mubarak family's rights to defense and effective judicial protection were not upheld during the proceedings, resulting in the annulment of the EU sanctions against them.
From 2015 to 2020, both Gamal and Alaa were acquitted of the remaining charges by Egyptian courts, marking a significant turn in their legal battles. Within the family, Gamal is affectionately known as 'Jimmy' under his half-Welsh mother, while Alaa is referred to as 'Alan'.
