Gangjong of Goryeo

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Gangjong of Goryeo

Gangjong of Goryeo, born Wang O on May tenth, one thousand one hundred fifty-two, was the twenty-second monarch of the Goryeo dynasty in Korea. As the eldest son of King Myeongjong, he was confirmed as the heir apparent in one thousand one hundred seventy-three, setting the stage for his eventual ascension to the throne.

His reign was marked by significant turmoil, particularly in one thousand one hundred ninety-seven when he and his father were forced to flee to Ganghwado due to the military ambitions of Ch'oe Ch'ung-hŏn. This period of exile would shape the political landscape of Goryeo, as Gangjong returned to the capital in one thousand two hundred ten, only to be given a royal title by his uncle, King Huijong, the following year.

Despite his royal status, Gangjong's reign was largely overshadowed by the influence of General Ch'oe, who effectively controlled the throne. Gangjong ruled for a brief two years before being succeeded by his son, Gojong. His legacy is intertwined with the complexities of power dynamics in Goryeo, reflecting the challenges faced by monarchs during this tumultuous era.

Gangjong's final resting place is located outside the ancient capital of Goryeo, in what is now known as Hyŏnhwa-ri, Kaepung-gun, South Hwanghae Province, North Korea, serving as a reminder of his brief yet impactful reign.
