García Galíndez

García Galíndez, known as 'the Bad' (el Malo), was a prominent ruler and warrior who played a significant role in the early medieval history of the Iberian Peninsula. Born in the year seven hundred eighty, he was the son of Galindo Belascotenes and became the Count of Aragon and Conflent in the year eight hundred twenty.

His marriage to Matrona, the daughter of Aznar Galíndez I, Count of Aragon, was marred by familial conflict. A prank by his brothers-in-law, Centule and Galindo, led to a dramatic turn of events when they locked him in a house during Midsummer. In a fit of rage, García retaliated by murdering Centule and subsequently repudiating Matrona, forging an alliance with Íñigo Arista of Pamplona, whose daughter he later married.

In the year eight hundred twenty, with the support of Íñigo, García deposed the Frankish vassal Aznar, solidifying his power as Count. His military prowess was evident in eight hundred twenty-four when he, alongside Musa ibn Fortún of the Banu Qasi, supported Íñigo against the Frankish counts, contributing to their defeat.

García's reign came to an end around eight hundred thirty-three, either through death or retirement from governance. He was succeeded by his son, Galindo Garcés, ensuring the continuation of his legacy in the region.
