García Sánchez of Castile

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of García Sánchez of Castile

García Sánchez of Castile, born on November first in the year one thousand eight, was a prominent ruler and warrior who held the title of the last independent count of Castile from the year one thousand seventeen until his untimely death.

As the son of Sancho García and Urraca, García ascended to power at a tender age, with his minority governed by several influential Castilian magnates and his aunt, Urraca, Abbess of Covarrubias. During this period, the county found itself under the protective wing of his brother-in-law, King Sancho III of Pamplona, also known as Sancho the Great.

García reached his majority in the year one thousand twenty-eight, and the following year, he made plans to marry Infanta Sancha, the sister of Bermudo III of León. Tragically, as he approached the church of John the Baptist for the ceremony, his life was cut short by the assassination carried out by the exiled noblemen, brothers Rodrigo Vela and Íñigo Vela.

In the aftermath of his death, the countship was passed on to his nephew Ferdinand, the younger son of his sister Muniadona and her husband, Sancho the Great, who subsequently married García's intended bride, Sancha.
