Garfield Sobers

The Right Excellent Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, known affectionately as Sir Gary or Sir Garry Sobers, is a legendary figure in the world of cricket. Born on July 28, 1936, in Bridgetown, Barbados, he is celebrated as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the sport. Sobers made his first-class debut at the tender age of sixteen in 1953 and quickly rose to prominence, making his Test debut for the West Indies the following year.

Throughout his illustrious career, which spanned from 1954 to 1974, Sobers showcased his exceptional skills as an aggressive batsman, versatile bowler, and outstanding fielder. He achieved remarkable milestones, including scoring his maiden Test century against Pakistan in 1958, where he went on to set a record with three hundred sixty-five not out, a feat that stood unchallenged until Brian Lara surpassed it in 1994.

In 1965, Sobers took on the mantle of captain for the West Indies, leading the team until 1972. His leadership extended beyond national duties as he also captained a Rest of the World XI during their tour of England in 1970. Over his career, he played ninety-three Test matches, amassing eight thousand thirty-two runs at an impressive average of fifty-seven point seventy-eight, while also claiming two hundred thirty-five wickets.

Sir Garfield Sobers' contributions to cricket were recognized when he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975. He became a dual citizen of Barbados and Australia through marriage in 1980 and was honored as one of the eleven National Heroes of Barbados in 1998. His legacy continues to be celebrated, particularly with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.
